Prabhat-Filme auf Video-CD

Indische Klassiker aus den 30er und 40er Jahren sind jetzt im Handel erschienen. Das traditionsreiche indisches Studio Prabhat Film (Wikipedia) hat einige seiner bekannten Werke auf Video-CD herausgebracht. Von den ca. 30 lieferbaren Filmen haben 5 englische Untertitel:

Sant Tukaram

The film is based on the life of the of 17th century saint from Maharashtra.A poet whose work UNESCO had selected for translation. This pious,simple man was so much immersed in the worship of Lord Panduranga that his wife Awali,was eternally irritated and attempts to draw him to his mundane duties.Tukaram’s faith triumphed in the end,winning over orthodoxy.Legend says that he was bodily transported to Heaven. The film received plaudits at the Venice Film Festival in 1937 and was adjudged as one of the three best films of the world. This film is often selected for screening in various International Film Festivals.

Sant Dnyaneshwa

It was the period of Second World War.The entire world was against with inhuman massacre ordered by Hitler.In such times,Prabhat felt the need of making the film on Sant Dnyaneshwar, who despite so many sufferings and hurdles, preached the cause of humanity. The first Marathi film to be telecast by Bombay Doordarshan in 1972. It was the first Indian film screened in USA. „American Cinematograph“ carried a review in its October,1941 issue and praised trick photography of the film

Shejari

Another distinguished social film to be directed by Internationally known genius V. Shantaram. The film highlights the problem, crucial to Indian Society that of Hindu-Muslim unity. The film narrates the unfortunate scism that separates a Hindu from Muslim neighbour and a lifelong friend. Much of the film’s background related to dam and the photographic exploitation of the subject ending in the tragic dam-burst is marked by unique technical skill.The romantic interludes in the film are made all the more colourful by a climatic torch dance.

Ramshastri

The biographical film traces the career of an intrepid judge during the Peshwa regime of the Maratha Empire. The incorruptible Judge ,Ramshastri, boldly sentences the ruling Peshwa with punishment by death for murdering his nephew. The reconstruction of history is marked by dramatic thrills, the use of respledent costumes and breath taking opulent decor and sets. Shown at a number of National and International Film Festivals. The film received „The Best Film Award“ by Bengal Film Journalist Association.

Kunku

One of the finest social films of India of all times. Kunku explores the tragics of a May-December marriage. In this case, the bridegroom is a widower and the bride an intrapid and aspiring young woman.
Set in the typically middle class family of the country.The film develops its psychological tensions boldly, equally revolutionary solutions for the couples marital impasse. Photographed and acted with admirable realism. The film remains a reflection of Indian family worth studying. It was shown in Venice International Film Festival. Der sonst so zuverlässige Vertrieb induna.com in Westbengalen hat leider nur die Fassungen ohne englische Untertitel gelistet, so dass man die bei Prabhat Films direkt bestellen muss.

Nachtrag vom 27.10.2009:  Die Prabhat-Filme sind bei induna.com inzwischen auch auf DVD mit englischen Untertiteln erschienen, lieferbar als Box mit 10 Filmen (Prabhat Film Classics), oder einzeln, wobei einige schon vergriffen sind.

Der Film Council in Großbritannien hat Anfang dieses Jahres mit Lotteriegeld eine Metasuchmaschine nach Filmen im eigenen Land aufgesetzt.

Das Besondere an FindAnyFilm.com: Die Suche ist formatneutral: Kino, Fernsehen, DVD, Blu ray, Download oder Streaming – jeder kann sich verfügbare Filme in seinem bevorzugten Format anzeigen lassen. Für nicht zugängliche Titel und Formate gibt es einen Alert-Service. Man wird also benachrichtigt, wenn der gesuchte Lieblingsfilm aufgeführt, ausgestrahlt oder angeboten wird.

Die Datenbasis betrug am Anfang 30.000 Titel und soll laufend aktualisiert werden, was hoffentlich tatsächlich geschehen wird. Diese Titelbeschreibungen der Filme machen es nämlich möglich, dass man in Mailordershops für DVDs z. B. nach Originaltiteln suchen kann, auch wenn diese dort gar nicht verzeichnet sind.

Sedmikrásky – Tausendschönchen

Michael Brookie weist in seinem Blog auf die neue DVD-Ausgabe von „Sedmikrásky“ (Daisies) hin, die bei Secondrun in Großbritannien erschienen ist. Zum erstenmal ist eine restaurierte DVD dieser anarchistischen Komödie mit englischen Untertiteln in guter Qualität erhältlich. Sie basiert auf dem Master für die spanischen Ausgabe von Intermedio:

„I’ll certainly say is that this has a very fair claim to being Second Run’s most wholly satisfying release to date. The transfer would appear to be from the same master as the the Czech and Spanish editions discussed here, but it’s the only one from that source with English subtitles. Going from their comments, it looks as though this is closer to the Spanish edition, in that it doesn’t appear to have the glitches that the Czech one sports as a by-product of overzealous digital post-processing… “ (Kinoblog)

„Sedmikrásky“ gehört zu den bedeutendsten Werken der tschechischen Neuen Welle. Auf der DVD ist auch die Dokumentation „Cesta“ (Journey) über die 74jährige Regisseurin Vera Chytilová enthalten.

Wizard of Oz auf Blu-ray

Zum 70jährigen Geburtstag erscheint die restaurierte Fassung von „The wizard of Oz“ (Das zauberhafte Land) (Der Zauberer von Oz – die Geschichte) in einer „Ultimate Collector’s edition“ auf Blu ray und DVD (4 DVD oder 2 Blu ray). Dafür wurden die Technicolor-Negative in 8K abgetastet und für die Blu ray-Produktion auf ein 4K-Masterband übertragen:

„The film has been entirely remastered for the high-definition format. Each of the original Technicolor camera negatives was scanned using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final ‚capture‘ master was created in 4K, giving the Blu-ray twice the resolution of the master for the film’s previous DVD release. The Blu-ray also features Dolby TrueHD audio.

Included exclusively on the Blu-ray is the original extended version of „If I Only Had a Brain,“ performed by Ray Bolger and remastered in high-definition, and the documentary MGM: When the Lion Roars.

In addition new-to-disc ultimate edition extras include The Dreamer of Oz, a remastered, biographical 1990 TV movie about Oz author L. The World of Kanai Katsu

Der japanische Experimentalfilmer und Regisseur der neuen Welle in den 60ern Kana Kaitsu hat seine Filme auf DVD herausgebracht (mit engl. Untertiteln). In Deutschland wurden einige seiner Werke 2007 auf den Internationalen Kurzfilmtagen in Oberhausen gezeigt:

„Kanai Katsu, von Beruf her Kameramann, ist einer der großen eklektischen Exzentriker des japanischen Kinos: Beginnend 1969 mit Mujin retto(The Desert Archipelago) schuf Kanai in drei Werkschüben ein schmales, fast nur aus kurzen und mittellangen Filmen bzw. Videos bestehendes Kino-Oeuvre.

Kanai ist ein wild-wüster, verschmitzter Visionär, ein Bilderstürmer/-schöpfer, in dessen Schaffen sich klassische und kontemporäre Künste, Pop- und Hochkultur aus der eigenen Welt wie dem Westen fröhlich durchdringen – Arrabal’eske Exzesse treffen auf die fokussierte Körperlichkeit des butô, politische Anliegen werden manga-knallig artikuliert… Der Titel einer seiner schönsten Filme sagt schon alles: Yume hashiru(Dream Running).“ (Programm Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen)

Die limitierte DVD-Edition „The World of Kana Kaitsu„ von nur 500 Exemplaren enthält auf 5 DVDs sein gesamtes Werk und kann bei ihm selbst in Japan bestellt werden:

„… but in 1968 he founded his own company, Kanai Katsumaru Production and in the next few years he ade a trilogy of films that would fascinate, confuse and shock the cinematic establishment. Influenced by his interests in existential philosophy and surrealism Katsu’s „Smiling Milky Way Trilogy“, made up of 1969’s „The Desert Archipelago“ (above), 1971’s „Good-bye“, and 1973’s „The Kingdom“, would end up receiving praise from the likes of film scholars Max Tessier and Tony Rayns and would win honours at the Nyon International Film Festival where „The Desert Archipelago“, about a man raised by nuns, would take home the Grand Prix in 1969. In more recent years Katsu has split his time between teaching at both Tokyo Zokei University and the Image Forum Institute of the Moving Image and making short surreal films based on the Japanese poetic forms of tanka and haiku.

Despite his influence and critical success Katsu’s works have never gained the same kind of mainstream acknowledgement as his avant-garde peer Shuji Terayama, but now Katsu himself has assembled his entire filmography into a limited edition 5-disc DVD set titled „The World of Kanai Katsu“ that’s he’s selling through his personal website for ¥20,000 yen a copy (roughly $230.00 CAD). It might seem steep, but not only are these discs region free, but they all have English subtitles! For something this rare I think that’s a deal. (J-FilmpPow-wow)

Robert Bramkamp

Als Vorgeschmack auf die morgen beginnenden Arnoldhainer Filmgespräche feiert Rembert Hüser in der heutigen TAZ den deutschen Filmemacher Robert Bramkamp. Die Tagung „On the Money. Kino in Zeiten des Risikokapitals“ (pdf) soll die Darstellung von abstrakten ökonomischen Zusammenhängen im sinnlichen Medium des Films prüfen und dabei zeigen sich traditionell gestaltete Blockbuster wie „The International“ von Tom Tykwer unbekannteren Werken wie denen von Robert Bramkamp unterlegen:

„In der aktuellen Diskussion der Krise geht es um Phänomene, die sehr abstrakt sind und sich der Vorstellungskraft eines Nichtwirtschaftswissenschaftlers entziehen. Wie bringt man das trotzdem auf die Leinwand?

Rembert Hüser: Zum Beispiel so wie Robert Bramkamp. Der arbeitet seit den Achtzigerjahren an diesen Fragen. Der Kurzfilm „Beckerbillet“ von 1992 ist für mich ein Knaller. Er ist ein bisschen wie „Die Sendung mit der Maus“ und beschreibt die Herstellung der Kinoeintrittskarten durch die Firma Becker. Die sind ja ein Geldäquivalent und werden entsprechend hergestellt. Man kauft die Karte, man bekommt gewissermaßen einen anderen Geldschein, und als Gegenwert für das Abreißen der Karte wird einem das Ereignis des Films versprochen. Daran hängt Bramkamp eine Spielfilmgeschichte auf. Aus der heutigen Perspektive ist das gerade interessant, weil es die Rollenkarten nicht mehr gibt. An der Kinokasse druckt heute der Computer. Und „Gelbe Sorte“ …

… der erste abendfüllende Spielfilm Bramkamps, entstanden Mitte der Achtzigerjahre.

Rembert Hüser: „Gelbe Sorte“ ist ein Landwirtschaftsfilm, bei dem es um die Nichtproduktion von Überschüssen geht und darum, dass die Bauern eigentlich gar nicht mehr das produzieren müssen, wofür sie EU-Subventionen kriegen. Der Film handelt von der Simulation von Produktion – und das schon in den Achtzigerjahren! Der war seiner Zeit weit voraus. Mit „Der Bootgott vom Seesportclub“, dem jüngsten Film von Bramkamp, wird deutlich, dass die Auseinandersetzung mit Ökonomie viel mit Erzählmodellen zu tun hat. “ (Interview von Christina Nord mit Rembert Hüser. Die gute Nachricht für alle, die jetzt neugierig geworden sind: Robert Bramkamp hat 4 seiner Filme auf DVD veröffentlicht. Die Box kann man auf seiner Website direkt bestellen. Bisher war nur „Die Eroberung der Mitte“ 1999 als VHS bei Absolut Medien erschienen.

Johnny Mad Dog

In Frankreich ist heute „Johnny Mad Dog“ (deutsch), der Film von Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire über die Kindersoldaten von Liberia auf DVD und Blu ray erschienen (Engl. mit franz. Untertiteln). In Cannes 2008 in der Reihe „Un Certain Regard“ vorgestellt, erregte der Film das dem Sujet angemessene Entsetzen:

„The brutal French-Belgian-Liberian movie “Johnny Mad Dog,” an assaultive fiction about Liberian child soldiers made with boys and girls who actually fought in that country’s recent war, left me wrung out — furious, confused, deep in thought…

Although I’m certain Mr. Sauvaire means well — he talks a good line about wanting to get close to the truth, though doesn’t explain what truth he means — it’s impossible not to question what he wants his audience to take away from this spectacle. Terror? Pity?

I felt both, but was also repulsed by Mr. Sauvaire’s high-minded exploitation and provocative flourishes, like the image of the children walking through a graveyard as a radio broadcast of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech fills the air. (Liberia was founded by former American slaves in the mid-19th century.)…

During the prescreening pleasantries when some of the movie’s creators were introduced, one of the group assured the predominately white audience that Liberia’s president, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, and all the people of the republic stand behind “Johnny Mad Dog.” Afterward, still reeling from what I’d just seen, I wondered, Who am I to argue? — (Manhola Dargis: Where Children Fight the Wars, Innocence Dies First. Die offizielle Site des Films macht deutlich, wie kontrovers eine solche ästhetische Behandlung des Themas diskutiert werden kann, auch wenn die Laiendarsteller selbst Kindersoldaten waren. Der Film läßt allerdings auch über den neoliberalen Weckruf Maggie Thatchers nachdenken: „And, you know, there is no such thing as society…“ – eine Gesellschaft gibt es nicht.

Test der nicht optimal gemasterten DVD von heute auf filmsactu.com – enthalten sind auch zwei Kurzfilme des Regisseurs („O dios“, „Matalo“) und das 50minütige Making of „Acteurs Nés“ über die Arbeit mit den Laiendarstellern. Zusammen mit der DVD des Dokumentarfilms „Carlitos Medellin“ (Span. mit engl. Untertiteln) über ein ähnliches Thema in Kolumbien, die auch den Kurzfilm „La Mule“ enthält, liegt damit das gesamte Werk von Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire auf DVD vor.
