Die amerikanische Zeitschrift „Video Librarian – the Video Review Magazine for Libraries“ hat in ihrer neuesten Ausgabe die besten Dokumentarfilme auf DVD für das Jahr 2007 gekürt. Video Librarian 2007 Best Documentaries stellt 25 Dokumentationen heraus, von denen die meisten einen lebendigen Einblick in das US-amerikanische Alltagsleben geben, oft auf recht kontroverse Weise.

Die Themenvielfalt und das hohe ästhetische Niveau der Filme zeigen auch die engagierte Rezensionspraxis des „Video Librarian“ und den anspruchsvollen Bestandsaufbau der Bibliotheken dort mit dem Medium DVD. Fast alle Filme sind bequem und preiswert über amazon.com lieferbar.

People’s Palace

“There is no criteria for admission here except one, curiosity. That’s it,” sagt Bibliotheksdirektor Paul LeClerc in dem Film „The People’s Palace“. Der vor einem Jahr von PBS ausgestrahlte Film über die New York Public Library ist nun auch auf DVD lieferbar. Er zeichnet ein umfassendes, einstündiges Porträt dieses komplexen, vielseitigen Bibliothekssystems, das für alle Schichten der Bevölkerung und alle Anspruchsniveaus gleichermaßen arbeitet. Stolz berichtet die Bibliothek über den Film:

„From the quiet grandeur of the Rose Main Reading Room to the boisterous hum of a children’s reading hour at the Chatham Square Branch Library in Lower Manhattan, The New York Public Library comes alive in all of its complexity in a new one-hour documentary film premiering on public television in February. … also nichts für deutsche Bibliotheksideologen, deren Welt schon immer in sogenannte Öffentliche Bibliotheken für das Volk und wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken für die gebildeten Stände zerfallen ist. Apropos: Eine Bibliothekskarte der NYPL kostet $ 0,00.

DVD-on-demand 2

Der DVD on Demand-Service von Hewlett-Packard, von dem wir hier schon berichtet hatten, nimmt Gestalt an. Am letzten Mittwoch berichtete die Los Angeles Times von einem Vertragsabschluss mit Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE): „HP to Make Sony DVDs“:

„Sony is the first major Hollywood studio to work with HP in its fledgling business of making DVDs of movies, TV shows and other video content only when someone orders them — much like HP rival Dell Inc. does with computers. It will allow consumers to order DVDs of some of Sony’s older or more obscure programming, which retailers tend not to stock because it’s not economically viable.“ (Los Angeles Times)

Solche Entwicklungen wie DVD (MOD) – manufactured on demand- werden auch zeigen, ob Online-Filme eine kommerzielle Zukunft nicht eher als „Download to burn“, also auch als DVD-on-demand,  haben werden, wie es der schon der etwas ältere Artikel „DVDs – they will survive“ nahelegt. L‘ Argent

Carlotta Films in Frankreich hat für den 24. April 2008 „L’Argent“ von Marcel L‘ Herbier angekündigt (Kritik des Films).

“ To sum up, L’Argent is indisputably one of the great masterpieces of the silent age, a gripping, brilliantly constructed, hugely original piece of cinema. It deserves to be ranked alongside such works as Abel Gance’s Napoléon and Carl Dreyer’s La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc.“ (James Travers in filmsdefrance.com)

Die Doppel-DVD-Edition wird den Film in einer Fassung mit 164 Minuten Laufzeit und mit 120 Minuten Zusatzmaterial auf der zweiten Disc enthalten. 30 Minuten der ersten Fassung von 1929 ( 5344 Meter, 195 Min.) sind verloren gegangen. Ob es sich bei der DVD von Carlotta Films um die Version des CNC von 1984 (165 Min.) handelt, wird man sehen. Bisher war „L’Argent“ nur als DVD-R bei Looser than Loose Publishing erhältlich.

Enthalten sein wird vielleicht auch ein frühes „Making of“: Jean Drévilles Kurzfilm „Autour de L’Argent“ über die Dreharbeiten, der in den Archives du Film des CNC vorhanden ist:

„En 1928 Jean Dréville filme le tournage de „L’Argent“, de Marcel L’Herbier, dans les studios de la rue Francoeur, à la Bourse de Paris et à Joinville. La lumière mise en place, les premiers tours de manivelle actionnent les caméras : Brigitte Helm et Pierre Alcover jouent leur scène, dirigés par Marcel L’Herbier… “ (CNC: Autour de L’argent)

Nachtrag vom 27.1.2008: Wie aktuell doch ein solch alter Film sein kann. Der Fall Jérôme Kerviel lässt grüßen. In „Gemetzel am Nachmittag“ stellt Rüdiger Schaper im Tagessiegel die Zusammenhänge zur Vorlage von Emile Zola und zum Film von 1928 her, der 1 Jahr vor dem großen Börsenkrach gedreht wurde.

Universal für Blu Ray?

Wie Variety berichtet, ist Universal nicht mehr an das Format HD-DVD gebunden. Das Studio könnte also bald in das Blu-ray-Lager wechseln: „Blu-ray could win high-def battle: HD DVD backers could switch sides soon“ . Der Artikel bestätigt entsprechende Informationen:

„Daily Variety has confirmed that Universal’s commitment to backing HD DVD exclusively has ended. And Paramount has an escape clause in its HD DVD contract allowing it to release pics on Blu-ray after Warner Bros.‘ decision to back that format exclusively.“ (Variety)

Spätestens in der zweiten Jahreshälfte von 2008 wird es also nur noch ein High Def-Format für vorbespielte Discs geben.

Paramount für Blu Ray?

Wie schon im November zu vermuten war, als Warner seine Treue zum Blu Ray-Format beschwor, hat das Studio mit dem größten Filmkatalog und den meisten DVD-Veröffentlichungen aller Major Studios sich nun endgültig für dieses High Def-Format entschieden. Dass damit der Formatekrieg um die hochauflösende DVD nun seinem Ende entgegentreibt, zeigen Gerüchte um einen möglichen Schwenk von Paramount, ein Unternehmen des Viacom-Konzerns. Bloomberg.com berichtet in „Paramount Denies Report It Will Drop Toshiba’s HD DVD (Update2)“ von einem Vertrag mit dem HD-DVD-Konsortium, der es Paramount erlaubt, HD-DVD fallen zu lassen, wenn Warner sich für Blu Ray entscheiden sollte:

“ Paramount can defect because a clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp allows the studio to switch to Blu-ray if Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. dropped its support of Toshiba’s standard, the newspaper reported today, citing unidentified people familiar with the plan. Warner Bros. said on Jan. 4 it would drop its support of HD DVD.“ (Bloomberg.com). I

In diesem Fall würde nur noch Universal das HD-DVD-Format unterstützen – eine aussichtlose Position. Paramount hatte sich allerdings erst im August 2007 exklusiv für HD-DVD entschieden. Neue Meldungen dazu hier.

Nachtrag: Samsung Says There’s Life After Hollywood for HD DVD. DongSoo Jun, bei Samsung verantwortlich für die High Def-Formate, sieht interessante Perspektiven für HD-DVD:

„HD DVD doesn’t have to slink into a grave next to Betamax yet. It will become the chosen format for „private“ (that is, personal) content because the format—ahem, Toshiba and Microsoft—has a stronghold in the PC drive market. He expects Toshiba to really concentrate on the PC HD DVD market since it’s deader than disco if it loses there.
The format war ends. The „divide“ begins. And it’ll be even bigger, in a sense.“ (Gizmodo)
