Netflix und Netflix – DVD by Mail und Streaming

Netflix gibt es bekanntlich zweimal, einmal als den traditionellen Disc-by-mail-Versender in den USA mit einer Basis von immerhin noch 93.000 Titeln für 5.3 Mio. Abonnenten und als weltweit tätigen Streamingdienst von Filmen und Fernsehserien (sog. Subscription Video on Demand – S-VoD), der in den USA 42,3 Mio. Abonnenten hat (Stand Juli 2015).

Der Komfort des Streamings per Flatrate muss allerdings mit einem wesentlich schmaleren Filmangebot erkauft werden, das zudem bei weitem nicht so aktuell ist wie das DVD-Angebot. Da helfen auch einige wenige Eigenproduktionen wie „House of Cards“ nicht. Denn S-VoD steht vor dem Free-TV fast am Ende der Auswertungskette von Filmen, während Discs den Anfang bei der Filmauswertung für den Home-Video-Markt machen. Schließlich verdienen damit die Rechteinhaber wesentlich mehr als mit der Lizenzierung an Streamingdienste.

Und da liegt auch die Ursache für das schmale Filmangebot von S-VoD. Für Disc-by-Mail-Dienste gilt in den USA die sog. First-sale doctrine – sie können also im Markt frei auswählen, während Filme für das Streaming vom Rechteinhaber lizenziert werden müssen.

Über 50% des Gewinns von Netflix kommt heute noch aus dem Disc-by-mail-Geschäft. Wie es dort hinter den Kulissen zugeht, hat die New York Times recherchiert: Netflix Refines Its DVD-Busines, Even As Streaming Unit Booms:

„What’s interesting is that although the business is in a slow decline, there is still a huge demand there,” Mr. Breeggemann said of the DVD side, noting that Netflix had about 93,000 titles on DVD and next-day delivery service for 92 percent of its subscribers. Recently released films tend to be available only on DVD and not on the streaming service because of rights issues.“

Allerdings betreibt Netflix für sein DVD-Geschäft keine Bestandspflege mehr. Hier wird wohl auf Verschleiß gefahren, wie dieser Artikel auf KQED Arts nahelegt: For Cinephiles, Netflix is Less and Less an Option.

Aufbau und Erhaltung großer, öffentlich zugänglicher Filmbestände auf DVD und  Blu-ray wird also immer mehr zu einer gemeinnützigen Aufgabe, wie das große Bibliotheken mit Büchern schon immer gemacht haben.

Übrigens: Mr. Breeggemann hält als Spezialist für den Postversand nicht jede Neuerung für sinnvoll. Hypes sind eben manchmal nur Hypes, auch wenn sie von Jeff Bezos kommen:

Arrow Films: Michael Brooke über die Walerian Borowczyk Collection

Auf dem soeben zu Ende gegangenen Festival Il Cinema Ritrovato wurde der Preis für die beste DVD-Box an Arrow Films für ihre Edition CAMERA OBSCURA: THE WALERIAN BOROWCZYK COLLECTION vergeben. Gewürdigt wurde die unglaubliche Sorgfalt und der Enthusiasmus, mit dem diese Sammlung der wichtigsten Filme Borowczyks geschaffen wurde:

The transfers are fantastic and even the choices made in subtitling are graphically superior compared to most of the releases we have considered. Über die editorische Arbeit an solch einer Blu-ray-/ DVD-Ausgabe hat The Digital Fix drei ausführliche, sehr lesenswerte Interviews veröffentlicht, und zwar mit dem Verantwortlichen für diese Blu-ray-/DVD-Box Michael Brooke, einem ausgewiesenen Spezialisten für den osteuropäischen Film, sowie mit dem zuständigen Restaurator James White und dem Chef von Arrow Video,  Franceso Simeoni:

Man bekommt einen guten Eindruck, welche Arbeitsumgebung gebraucht wird, damit solch herausragende Editionen entstehen können.

Filmrestaurierung im Packard Campus der Library of Congress

Gestern ist in der Zeitschrift WIRED ein Artikel über die Arbeit in einem der größten Filmarchive der Welt erschienen, dem Packard Campus der Library of Congress, dem National Audiovisual Conservation Center in Culpeter. Bryan Gardiner beschreibt in „Inside the Nuclear Bunker: Where America Preserves Its Movie History“ sehr facettenreich, was sich dort hinter den Mauern abspielt. Früher war das Gebäude ein atomsicherer Bunker mit Geldreserven für die Zeit nach einem möglichen Nuklearangriff… Heute versucht man dort das Verlöschen der eigenen Filmgeschichte zu verhindern. In dem Zusammenhang sollte man vielleicht noch einmal an die entsprechenden deutschen Verhältnisse erinnern, nämlich an das Bundesarchiv „Abteilung Filmarchiv (Abt. FA)“, das ebenfalls zu den größten Filmarchiven der Welt zählt, dem aber von der Bundespolitik bei der Änderung des Bundesarchivgesetzes 2013 nach langer Debatte nicht einmal ein Recht zur Pflichtabgabe deutscher Filme zugestanden wurde (lediglich eine Pflichtregistrierung nach § 7a BArchG), was eine vollständige Bewahrung des deutschen Filmerbes von vornherein unmöglich macht. Vom Archivieren und Zugänglichmachen der deutschen Fernsehgeschichte wollen wir hier erst gar nicht reden.

Noch eine Anmerkung: Die im Artikel von WIRED erwähnte National Film Registry umfasst die besonders erhaltenswerten Filme, denen jedes Jahr 25 Neue hinzugefügt werden. Die meisten dieser Filme sind, zumindest in den USA, auch auf DVD oder Blu-ray erhältlich (komplette Liste z. T. mit Kurzbeschreibungen und Essays zu den einzelnen Titeln in der National Film Registry).

Cinema Ritrovato 2015 DVD Awards

An experimental film, both humane and desperate, LES HAUTES SOLITUDES re-emerges from a forgotten past thanks to the excellent edition of Re-Voir Video. Garrel meets the challenge of filming Jean Seberg without any need for words or a story, thanks to the sweet tenderness of a camera that has managed to explore the face of a very famous actress in the past, and in 1974, at the time of the filming, on the edge of alcoholism and depression. He is able to disclose all her deepest secrets. A bold, must-see film.

BLÁZNOVA KRONIKA/A JESTER’S TALE

Karel Zeman is finally back. BLÁZNOVA KRONIKA is one of his works where all the peculiarities of his style are harmoniously mixed: life and dream, comedy and drama, naïveté (actual or presumed) and poetry, highlighted by the special effects. This film, unknown for too many years, testifies to the unique personality of one of the most talented Czech filmmaker of the second half of the 1900s.

Yum, Yum, Yum! It is a real pleasure to enjoy 22 “recipes”, cooked, spiced up, and served by chef-filmmaker Les Blank (1935-2013). An astonishing output produced in total independence from 1968 to 2005, restored in 2K. Blank takes Flaherty-style journeys to Creole and Cajun communities, Texas and New Orleans’ jazz-lands, Flower Power, and beyond. A booklet, interviews, outtakes, and glimpses of unfinished projects bring back to life “the chronicler of what America is all about at its best,” as his old pal Werner Herzog describes him.

Milestone’s laudable dedication to preserving and disseminating the work of one of the pioneers of the New American Cinema, the indefatigable Shirley Clarke, is a painstaking labor of love that deserves top recognition. This company is doing something exceptional: restoring each title on film, distributing each title on film, and releasing continuing anthologies of shorts and features digitally.

THE HOUSE OF MYSTERY/LA MAISON DU MYSTÈRE

THE HOUSE OF MYSTERY, starring the redoubtable Ivan Mosjoukine, is one of the most outstanding film serials of any era–thrillingly inventive and distinctively different from Feuillade or Gaston Ravel–and the only serial of the three produced by Albatross known to have survived. Peter von Bagh brought this film to Bologna during his early years as artistic director of Il Cinema Ritrovato, and it remains a shining example of analogic restoration.

Besondere Erwähnungen der einzelnen Juroren

The jurors would like to stress that none of us is in a position to know all the important DVD and Blu-Ray releases, even though all of us have encountered important examples, some of which were not nominated for awards but deserve in any case to be far better known. So five of us have selected one or more personal favorites that he would like to recommend. (Although Mark McElhatten wasn’t able to attend the festival this year, and decided not offer a personal selection, he was an active member of the jury, and even furnished many of the above notes.)

Lorenzo Codelli: Maclean Rogers’ I’LL WALK BESIDE YOU (UK/1943) and Carol Reed’s THE STARS LOOK DOWN (UK/1939), Renown Pictures (both DVDs).

Lucien Logette: LE BONHEUR EST POUR DEMAIN (Les documents cinématographiques, on DVD) is a lost film, unseen since 1962, the only feature of Henri Fabiani, a documentarist once known but subsequently forgotten. This is one of the only treatments of the working class in the French cinema of this period, and it implicitly anticipates the social upheavels that would come soon afterwards.
